Coder builds software that moves software development onto infrastructure a company controls, either in its own cloud or on premises. Platform teams define environments as code with Terraform templates, and developers open them from VS Code, JetBrains or a browser in seconds instead of configuring laptops. The same governed environments can run AI coding agents, with Coder Agents providing a native agent that works with any model, and an AI governance layer that routes and logs model and tool usage across teams. Administrators control permissions, network isolation and audit trails, which matters for regulated sectors such as government, defense, finance and automotive. The core project is open source, with paid premium editions for large organizations.
